The first one I will recommend is the first book on cutting I ever bought. The book is written in French and I will point out that an instructional book about cutting in French is pretty rare. It’s called Manuel de Lapidairerie: La Taille des pierres à Facettes by Daniel Pogorzelski. The book never leaves my cutting station. It’s a great book about cutting that also talks about angles, optics, and light return and features different diagrams as well.
In order to fabricate the compensator, a rectangular slab of quartz approximately 15 × 35 millimetres in size is ground into a wedge with a thickness ranging between 0.1 and 0.25 millimetres from the thin to the thick dimensions.
Jim Perkins is a frequent contributor to Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist magazine. He began to cut stones at age 12 in his father’s rock shop. He studied art and design at Cuyahoga Valley Art Center and at the University of Akron and gem faceting at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts. He has published several books, including Learning to Facet in the 21st Century using the Fac-ette and Learning to Facet in the 21st Century Using the Facetron.
John Dyer is an award-winning, innovative gemstone cutter with nearly 40 cutting awards to his credit, including 33 AGTA Cutting Edge Awards. Additionally, John is the only gem cutter who has swept all the awards in one category, which he did in both 2005 and 2007. Learn more about John at JohnDyerGems.com.
there are a number of online resources that students can avail themselves of at little or no cost. Foremost among this is the Gemology Project, an online archive of gemmological information that is both accurate and free.
For those who have questions as they study gemmology, GemologyOnline is a free forum with thousands of members, many of whom have specialised expertise and gladly share it.
Let us also not forget that one of the best resources for study is a good book. Here are some general introductions to gemmology and gemstones that we can highly recommend, with great photos and accurate information, and all available at reasonable cost:
- Arem, Joel (1987) Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones. US$76.
- Arem, Joel (1994) Gems and Jewelry. US$4.
- Hall, Cally (2002) Gemstones. US$13.
- Liddicoat (1993) Handbook of Gem Identification. US$78.
- Matlins, Antoinette (2008) Gem Identification Made Easy. US$22.
- Newman, Renée (2003) Gemstone Buying Guide. US$13.
- Read, Peter (2008) Gemmology. US$33.
- Schumann, Walter (2009) Gemstones of the World. US$13.
- Wise, Richard (2006) Secrets of the Gem Trade. US$26.
